Unreal Tournament 2004 is a multiplayer-based First-Person Shooter videogame co-developed by Epic Games, Digital Extremes, Streamline Studios and Psyonix and released in 2004 for the PC. It's the sixth entry in the Unreal series, succeeding Unreal Tournament 2003.
Like in the prior game, you must build a team and destroy all opposing teams in order to beat the Final Boss and their team at the end of the Tournament in order to crown yourself champion. However, there were many changes introduced: for starters, Gorge (one of the many player characters of 2003), leading his team Juggernauts, dethroned previous champion Malcolm in the past Tournament by beating him in the finals. This led to a public confrontation between Malcolm and his teammates, Brock and Lauren, who split up and reformed their previous team, Iron Guard. Malcolm, on the other hand, reformed Thunder Crash with most of the original lineup plus some new faces. The Skaarj, this time full-blooded ones, are also participating with an own team in the Tournament, led by the ClanLord. And last, but definitely not least, Xan Kriegor, the former reigning champion and Final Boss of Unreal Tournament, is back, and has reformed his team, The Corrupt, in order to take the championship back.
The game is considered by the development team as the "full" version of 2003, containing all the content of Unreal Tournament 2003 and its two Bonus Packs, plus five new weapons (the Mine Layer, the Grenade Launcher, the Anti-Vehicle Rocket Launcher or AVRiL, a new version of the Sniper Rifle and the Target Painter) for an impressive 17-weapon count, four new gamemodes, 35 new characters (with six more added by way of the ECE Bonus Pack) and four new teams, and at least 54 new maps, with 15 more maps being added via Bonus Packs. The campaign also saw quite the refit, with money being added to it allowing you to change the next combat arena as well as betting on one-on-one matches and hiring newer and better teammates.
After graduating from university, I was lucky enough to land a job with a local games company. I have fond memories of those days, mostly because we got a whole hour for lunch. Few of us actually ate lunch during that hour, because games were permitted on the LAN. While all sorts of games were tried, my favourite was always Unreal Tournament 2004. Featuring a great range of weapons, vehicles and game modes, UT is, for many of us, the pinnacle of competitive first person shooter games. While Unreal Tournament 3 is the latest in the franchise, The more colourful 2004 edition remains a fan-favourite despite its age.
UT2004 should install on a modern PC without any issues. To install from the retail DVD version, simply put your game DVD into your computers optical drive and follow all on-screen prompts. If the games autorun prompt does not appear, browse to the DVD in Computer/This PC and run the Setup.exe file manually.
The fantastic gaming utility/in game overlay Evolve supports Unreal Tournament 2004. This tool lets you contact your friends, set up parties and organise matches, as well as take screenshots, videos and access the web all without having to keep switching back to the desktop.
Unreal Tournament 2004 is the third offering in the Unreal Tournament branch of the Unreal franchise. UT2004 is viewed by many as an extension of the work done in Unreal Tournament 2003, retaining most of the maps, characters and gametypes from that release, tweaking various issues that were brought up, and adding a considerable amount of new content: nearly 50 new maps, vehicular combat, the Assault gametype which had been excluded from UT2003, and the new gametype Onslaught. It was initially released on March 16, 2004 for the PC and March 31, 2004 for Mac OS X.
Specifically, Epic developed the new user interface, VoIP, voice command support for bots, 31 new characters, 31 new maps, design and implementation of the Assault gametype for inclusion in UT2004 (including new vehicles and turrets), and the new Sniper Rifle.
On September 24th, 2004, Epic released an updated version of the demo, using the (at the time) latest codebase for UT2004, Version 3334. Besides the obvious inclusion of many bugfixes and adjustments from the retail version, it added some new vehicles from the Editor's Choice Edition, as well as added two more maps to play, for a grand total of Seven:
The game enjoyed massive initial success and critical acclaim, being selected as Multiplayer Game of the Year by several publications. Still, UT2004 was not seen as a true successor to Unreal Tournament by some fans. In particular, many players disliked the floatier game mechanics and increased dodging abilities compared to UT that made it much more difficult to hit skilled opponents with non-hitscan weapons.
Over time, the number of people playing online began to dwindle. This was due to a variety of factors, including some players who felt that UT2004 was a mixed bag of fixes and lingering issues from UT2003. By 2009, most gamers moved on to other games leaving UT2004 with a mostly dead online scene, outside of Onslaught, TAM/Freon, Invasion and Assault Trials.
Unreal Tournament 2004 sports an extensive array of weapons, combining updated classic weapons from Unreal Tournament, newer weapons from UT2003, and all-new weapons. Several weapons were designed specifically for use in vehicle-based gametypes, and typically appear only in those gametypes. Superweapons can be turned off as an option, and so they may or may not appear in-game depending on the server setup. 2ff7e9595c
